The Biblical Doctrine of “IF”

In this mini-series entitled, “The Biblical Doctrine of IF”, we shall be confronted with this tiny word in our English language, “if”.  According to Noah Webster, the word “if”, “is used as the sign of a condition, or it introduces a conditional sentence or statement”.  As one reads the Holy Scriptures, he will come across many statements containing this conditional qualifier.  Consider, for instance:

John 7:17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

John 7:37  In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

John 8:51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.

In each of these verses, a very profound biblical doctrine or biblical application is being called upon by the speaker to his audience.  If one takes the time to study the different “ifs” in the Scriptures, he will walk away with a profound understanding of what it means to be a Christian.  My hope is that as you follow along in this series, you will be likewise be blessed with the understanding I have gained in my own study.
