Galatians

Galatians forms the legal companion to Paul’s letter to the church at Rome.  Thus, both letters should be studied side by side when pursuing the truth contained in each letter.  It is quite evident from the internal evidence that this letter was written shortly after the Jerusalem Council in A.D. 50 (see Acts 15).  Furthermore, it is evident that this letter was written following Paul’s first evangelistic tour amongst the Gentiles (Acts 13-14) and before his second evangelistic trip.  In Paul’s letter to the churches in Galatia, he tackles the threat caused by false brethren who were perverting the Gospel of free, unconditional grace, by mixing it with the leaven of apostate Judaism which resulted in the death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In this running commentary, we will consider Paul’s stern and sober warning to those who profess faith in Christ, like those to whom the letter of Hebrews was written, not to be bewitched by those who would take the types, shadows, figures, and symbols of the Old economy and use them as a wedge amongst the people of God.  The present-day Christian Zionist movement (better known as Dispensational Premillennialism) attempts to divide God’s people into two separate camps--national Israel versus the Church of Christ.  God only has one people, His elect.  They must be regenerated by the same Spirit; they must respond to the message of the Gospel by faith; they must place that faith in one Savior only--the Lamb of God despite whatever “dispensation” they may live in.  God has only one true Israel--Jew and Gentile saved by faith alone in Christ alone for all eternity.

May you be blessed in the meditations provided in this series.             –Pastor Bob Spagnuolo
