When Pastor Joe
Wright from the
Central Christian
Church, Wichita
Kansas was asked to
open the new session
of the Kansas House
of Representatives
on 23 January 1996,
everyone was
expecting the usual
generalities, but
this is what they
heard:
"Heavenly Father,
we come before
You to ask Your forgiveness.
We seek
Your direction and
Your guidance.
We know
Your Word says,
"Woe to those who call evil good."
But that's what we've done.
We've lost our spiritual equilibrium.
We have inverted our values.
We have ridiculed the absolute
Truth of Your Word in the name of moral pluralism.
We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle.
We have worshiped other gods and called it
multi-culturalism.
We've neglected the needy and called it self-preservation.
We have abused power and called it political savvy.
We've exploited the poor and called it a lottery.
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.
In the name of choice, we have killed our unborn.
In the name of right to life, we have killed abortionists.
We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it taxes.
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem.
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
We have
polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.
Search us, oh, God, and know our hearts today.
Try us. Show us any wickedness within us.
Cleanse us from every sin and set us free.
Guide and bless these men and women who have
been sent here by the people of the State of Kansas,
and that they have been ordained by
You to govern this great state.
Grant them Your wisdom to rule.
May their decisions direct us to the center of
Your will.
And, as we continue our prayer and as we come in out of the fog,
give us clear minds to accomplish our goals as we begin this Legislature.
For we pray in Jesus' name,
Amen!"
The response was
immediate. Some
legislators walked
out during the
prayer in protest to
these words of exhortation.
There was also
several legislators
and newspapers that
also publicly criticized
the above prayer to
gain political
points for their
party.
In six short weeks,
the Central
Christian Church,
where Rev. Wright is
pastor, logged more
than 5,000 phone
calls with only 47
of those calls
responding
negatively. [What
does this response
indicate about the quality
and character of
some of our legislators
today?]
The
church has received
international
requests for copies
of this prayer from
Africa, India and
Korea .
Commentator Paul
Harvey aired 'this
prayer' on his Radio
Program, 'The Rest
of the Story,' and
received the
greatest response to
this program,
in-fact more than
any other he has
ever aired.
With the Lord's
help, may this
prayer sweep over
our Nation and
wholeheartedly
become our desire so
that we again can be
called 'one nation
under God.
P.S.
Remember
this: Our National
and Personals Sins
are greater today
than numerous other
nations and
societies that no
longer exist. We may
have national
prosperity, but only
few who profess to
be Christians are
taking a valiant
stand against the
many evils of our
day. We in reality
could be on under
the wrath of God,
and on our way to
national extinction,
unless we repent! "So
that they are
without excuse:
Because that, when
they knew God, they
glorified Him not as
God, neither were
thankful; but became
vain in their
imaginations, and
their foolish heart
was darkened.
Professing
themselves to be
wise, they became
fools, And changed
the glory of the
un-corruptible God
into an image made
like to corruptible
man. .
Wherefore God also
gave them up to
uncleanness through
the lusts of their
own hearts, to
dishonour their own
bodies between
themselves: Who
changed the truth of
God into a lie, and
worshipped and
served the creature
more than the
Creator, who is
blessed for ever.
Amen. Romans
1:20-25.
Is
your life honoring
to your Lord each
day?
Pray
for your nation and
all in authority: "I
exhort therefore,
that, first of all,
supplications,
prayers,
intercessions, and
giving of thanks, be
made for all men; For
kings, and for all
that are in
authority; that we
may lead a quiet and
peaceable life in
all godliness and
honesty. For this is
good and acceptable
in the sight of God
our Saviour; Who
will have all men to
be saved, and to
come unto the
knowledge of the
truth. 1 Timothy
2:1-4.
