Politics,
Elections and
the Christian
We’ve been told,
or it has been
jokingly said,
that there are
two topics about
which you do not
converse in
polite
society—politics
and religion.
In this
four-part
mini-series, I
confront this
thinking by
showing that the
Bible addresses
both topics
openly.
Scripture
exposes false
religion while
at the same time
revealing what
constitutes true
religion .
Furthermore,
Scripture also
addresses the
subject of
politics and the
Christian’s
proper response
towards those
who hold
positions of
authority over
him.
By “politics”, I
mean:
v
God has ordained
the institution
of human
governments.
(Romans 13:1-7)
v
God promotes
(elevates) and
disposes
(removes) the
leaders of this
world as He so
wills. (Daniel
4, Romans
9:14-17)
v
All elements of
human government
are tainted by
sin and the
Fall, resulting
in flawed
instruments
(people)
administrating
and ruling over
the nations and
kingdoms of this
world.
v
Since we live in
a free society,
as citizens, we
ought to cherish
our right to
vote. But we
are to vote with
knowledge and
prudence.
v
No
one political
party has the
ability to
deliver all the
“goods” and no
one candidate
can ever be the
“savior” of his
nation.
We face a new
election cycle
and we are about
to select a new
president as
well as other
office holders.
Each candidate
is making
promises that he
or she can solve
all our nation’s
problems.
The
accusations,
mud-slinging and
avarice on both
sides of the
aisle are
flying. So
what
is the voter to
do? What is the
believer to do?
In parts three
and four, I
consider the
qualifications
and the
requirements of
the following:
v
Moses and the
judges
(arbitrators)
v
Joshua, the son
of Nun
v
Aaron’s tailor
v
Tabernacle
construction
foreman
v
Israel’s kings
as directed by
God
My hope in this
recently
preached
mini-series is
that it will
provide the
tools for all of
us to make wise
choices in this
upcoming
presidential
election cycle.
Furthermore any
other forth
coming election:
national, state
or local
contest: we
should know the
issues, the
candidates',
positions, their
abilities and
qualifications,
before casting
our vote. For
Jesus has told
us to "Occupy
until I come!"
