BLESSED
HYMNS OF THE FAITH
ABIDE
WITH ME
Maybe
one of the most blessed passages of scripture is given to us in Luke 24.
This event took place immediately after our Lord Jesus Christ was
crucified. Two of Christ’s disciples were on the road to Emmaus, talking
to themselves and grieving over their Lord’s death, when a person
appeared in their mist. They
were so distraught that they were unable to discern that it was their
crucified and risen Lord, even those all three were discussing the events
that were happening during the last three days. But our Lord was there
with a purpose and a message for every believer when Jesus said:
"O
fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His
glory?” And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded unto
them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself. And they drew
nigh unto the village, whither they went: and He made as though He would
have gone further. But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us”:
for it is toward evening and the day is far spent. And He went in to tarry
with them.
. . and their eyes were opened, and they knew Him. Luke
24:25-31
Surely
Henry F. Lyte and William Monk were familiar with
this
passage of scripture when they composed this hymn.
ABIDE
WITH ME
Abide
with me, fast fail the eventide
The
darkness deepens, Lord with me abide
When
others helpers, fail and comfort flee
Help
of the helpless, O abide with me.
Swift
to its close ebbs out of life’s little day
Earth’s
joys grow dim, its glories pass away
Change
and decay in all around I see
O
Thou that changes not, abide with me.
I
need Thy presence, every passing hour
What
but Thy grace, can foil the temper’s power?
Who
like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through
cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.
Hold
Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes
Shine
through the gloom, and point me to the skies
Heaven’s
morning breaks and earth’s vain shadows flee
In
life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
Amen!
